The David Barnett Gallery was established in a converted basement in 1966 when David Barnett was a 19 year old art student. In 1985 the Gallery's collection was relocated to its current space in the beautiful and historic Button Mansion on Milwaukee's east side, overlooking Lake Michigan.
The mansion was built by a prominent Milwaukee physician named Henry H. Button; one of the last remaining masterpieces in Milwaukee that reflects the Italianate influence on Victorian architecture, with unique Cream City Brick. The ornate fireplaces, plaster cornices, paneling, inland parquet floor and brass fixtures have been beautifully preserved.
The gallery specializes in European and American masters, regional and nationally recognized artists as well as emerging Wisconsin artists. Latin American, Asian, and African American artists also adorn the gallery along with Ethnographic art from Africa, Indonesia and Oceania. The gallery has an international reputation for its extensive collection of Picasso ceramics and Milton Avery oil paintings. With over three floors of artwork and 6,000 available pieces, the gallery provides an art viewing experience unlike any other in Wisconsin.
When the gallery first opened it primarily featured artwork from local art students attending Marquette University, UW-Milwaukee, Cardinal Stritch University and other Milwaukee colleges. Today the collection includes works by some of the greatest and most well known artists in the world, such as Cassatt, Daumier, Lichtenstein, Masson, Matisse, Dali, Miro, Picasso, Rembrandt, Stella and Thiebaud. The Gallery's extensive collection displays work in mediums ranging from painting and photography to glass work, sculpture, fiber art and ceramics. Since 1966 the gallery has hosted hundreds of exhibitions for local and international artists, famous and unknown artists alike as well as David Barnett's own works. The gallery currently exhibits new shows four times a year and attracts visitors from near and far.
The David Barnett Gallery also provides many additional services for its clients' convenience including a full in-house frame department, art installation, consultations and appraisals, restoration and conservation, delivery and Van Go Frame and Art: America's Gallery to You, its mobile art service which delivers to commercial and residential spaces for on-location selection.
